What can you expect in this role?
Reporting to the Underwriting Manager, the Property Underwriting Team Leader is responsible for leading a team of underwriters, ensuring high service standards, and driving profitable underwriting results. This role combines people leadership, underwriting expertise, and operational excellence, while maintaining strong broker relationships and supporting business objectives.

What you’ll do?
Team Leadership & Operations (40%)
  • Lead daily team activities to ensure service level agreements are consistently met
  • Manage staffing levels and coordinate resources to support workloads and deadlines
  • Supervise direct reports and provide guidance on performance and development
  • Facilitate team meetings and foster a collaborative, high-performing environment
  • Support development of underwriting procedures and best practices
Staff Development & Performance Management (30%)
  • Coach, mentor, and develop team members to enhance performance and career growth
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and provide ongoing feedback
  • Monitor productivity and take corrective actions when required
  • Recommend, monitor and enforce binding authority limits for staff
Underwriting Operations: (30%)
  • Act as the primary escalation point for broker inquiries and underwriting concerns, ensuring timely and professional resolution within established authority levels
  • Align team members to underwriting objectives, ensuring consistent execution and shared goals
  • Partner with underwriters on risk selection to maintain consistency in underwriting practices, approving exceptions in line with company guidelines
  • Support the team with complex or high-volume referrals to ensure efficient turnaround and quality decisions
  • Provide feedback to leadership and marketing on broker trends, training needs, and emerging issues
  • Build and maintain strong broker relationships to support profitable and sustainable growth
  • Participate in broker performance reviews and contribute insights to strengthen partnerships
  • Contribute to special projects and departmental initiatives as needed
  • Stay informed on market trends, regulatory changes, and product updates, and recommend improvements to processes and offerings
  • Commit to ongoing professional development and industry learning
  • Represent the company at industry events and broker meetings as required

What you bring?
Experience & Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in personal insurance, with strong underwriting expertise
  • Deep knowledge of property and casualty insurance, including risk analysis. Knowledge of personal auto products is an asset.
  • CIP / FCIP designation or post-secondary degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must have a General Insurance Agent Level 2 License 
  • Previous leadership experience is an asset

Actual salary for the role may vary depending on work location of the successful candidate and other factors including but not limited to, skills, education, experience, working conditions and the local labour market.  In addition to base pay, eligible employees may participate in various incentive plans which are paid out at the discretion of the company and subject to individual and company performance.
