What can you expect in this role?
Reporting to the Team Leader, Auto Underwriting, the Senior Auto Underwriter is responsible for providing detailed underwriting and risk analysis for Family’s AutoCover product. The incumbent is involved in the execution of daily operations of the Auto Underwriting team. They are to act as an experienced resource and provide guidance to the Auto Underwriting team in order to ensure a high standard of service is provided to our brokers.

The Senior Auto Underwriter works closely with the Auto Underwriting Team Leader to plan and execute company directives and goals. The incumbent will assist in handling complex new business, prepare large loss claims reports, and review claims breach cases in accordance with the Company’s strategic goals.  They will assist the Auto Team Leader with various tasks and duties as needed. They act as a mentor to junior auto underwriters and are familiar with current departmental procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Auto Team Leader and Underwriting Manager with special projects to help with the performance of the auto team  
  • Coordinate the daily allocation of team referrals and the exceptions report
  • Participate in user acceptance testing (UAT) for auto development projects as needed
  • Be involved as a resource person or SME for auto development projects as needed
  • Assist with the daily renewal decline list to underwriting support
  • Provide binding approval to auto underwriters within the senior binding authority
  • Answer broker enquiries and make recommendations through verbal and written communication
  • Mentor and train junior auto underwriters in various procedures and proper phone etiquette
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other department teams as needed  
  • Review and decide on claims notification referrals
  • Understand underwriting business rules and guidelines, communicating these internally and with brokers
  • Assist with undisclosed losses or cancellations on new business reports
  • Assist in reviewing manual backdate reports
  • Prepare and/or update large loss reports
  • Recommend updates to the auto underwriting guidelines and manual
  • Participate in company or industry functions to strengthen broker relationships

What you bring to the role?
Experience & Educational Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as an auto or personal lines underwriter
  • CIP designation or actively pursuing a CIP designation with completed courses or equivalent
  • Level 2 General Insurance license is strongly preferred
  • Availability and flexibility to support the auto underwriting business hours (Monday to Friday from 8:30 am-5:30 pm and Saturday from 8:30 am-4:00 pm)
  • Strong attention to detail and results-oriented
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Highly organized, requiring minimal supervision in the completion of duties
  • Ability to multi-task and remain calm under pressure
  • Basic knowledge of auto insurance in BC and underwriting fundamentals
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Proactive, involved and collaborative in the workplace
  • Act as a positive role model within the department and organization

Actual salary for the role may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate and other factors including but not limited to, skills, education, experience, working conditions and the local labour market.  In addition to base pay, eligible employees may participate in various incentive plans which are paid out at the company's discretion and subject to individual and company performance.
